When does a girl turn into a woman?
In 2011, I started a documentary project that follows the coming of age of a group of six best friends from Jerusalem, Israel who were then 15-years-old. I have been photographing them every 5 years, in 2016, and again in 2021, to document the young women they had become. During the course of taking photos, I have seen the women I photograph become more and more comfortable in their bodies, and despite the fact that their innocence has not faded, another part of them has begun to emerge.
This is a documentary project documenting Israel's lesser-known, and less “holy” sides, from the perspective of a local.
'Tznius' deals with the concept of covering in Jewish tradition.
"Tznius", Yiddish for modesty, is a term used often in ultra-orthodox Judaism and among other Jewish religious groups to describe a woman's way of dressing and behaving. There is a direct correlation between the character of a woman and the lengths she goes to cover her body and hair and act in accordance with what is expected.
'Smiles' explores the notion of memory, and the distortion of reality through photography. Through chemical manipulation that is done directly on the printed image, I remove parts of the image and transform it into a unique object. In addition to exploring the medium's boundaries, I am interested in how we rely on it to enforce and sustain our memories.
